An Exploratory Study on the Death Attitude of the Oldest Old: A Case Study on Seoul Citizens Aged 80 and Older

Abstract
A reflection on death among older adults and the affects on the quality of the rest of their lives. The topic of death has long been taboo in Korea. The discussion of dignified death only started in the mid-2000s. The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes of the oldest old in Seoul and to find social responses which will help secure death with dignity. To achieve the research goal, this study applied a mixed method. The quantitative data used in this study is data researched in the 2018 Seoul Aging Survey. In order to collect qualitative data, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 Seoul citizens aged 80 and older. The results of both quantitative and qualitative studies show that the oldest old perform specific actions to prepare for their death. According the results of qualitative study, a s the o ldest old experience the death of someone close to them their feelings about death eased. Behaviors for preparing death depends on socioeconomic conditions among the oldest old. The poor oldest old spend the rest of their life worrying about saving money to die comfortably. As everyone faces death, it is necessary to review universal support such as educational provision about death preparation and funeral services.
